Drain Cleaning vs. Drain Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting: Which Does Your Phoenix Home Actually Need?

You've got a slow drain — or worse, a completely blocked one. You call a plumber and they start talking about snaking, jetting, or drain cleaning. What's the difference, and which one do you actually need? Here's a straightforward breakdown to help Phoenix Valley homeowners make an informed decision.

Drain Snaking (Drain Auger)

A drain snake — also called an auger — is a flexible metal cable that's fed into the drain to physically break up or retrieve a blockage. It's the most common first-line tool for clearing clogs and works well for hair, soap buildup, small objects, and basic organic blockages. Snaking is fast, relatively inexpensive, and effective for straightforward clogs. However, it doesn't clean the pipe walls — it just punches through the blockage.

Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure stream of water (typically 3,000–4,000 PSI) to blast away buildup from the inside of your pipes — grease, scale, roots, and years of accumulated debris. It's more thorough than snaking because it actually cleans the pipe wall rather than just clearing a path. Hydro jetting is ideal for recurring clogs, grease-heavy kitchen lines, and older pipes with significant buildup. It does cost more than snaking, but it provides longer-lasting results.

When to Use Each Method

  • Single slow or clogged drain: Start with snaking. Fast and effective for most common household clogs.

  • Recurring clogs in the same drain: Consider hydro jetting to fully clear the pipe walls rather than just punch through the blockage again.

  • Kitchen drain with grease buildup: Hydro jetting is especially effective at clearing grease that snaking can't fully remove.

  • Main sewer line blockage: Camera inspection first, then jetting or snaking depending on what's found.

  • Tree root intrusion: Jetting or mechanical root cutting, followed by a camera inspection to assess pipe condition.

What About Chemical Drain Cleaners?

We strongly advise against store-bought chemical drain cleaners. Products like Drano contain caustic chemicals that can damage older pipes, are harmful to the environment, and often don't fully resolve the underlying issue. They may give temporary relief while masking a more serious problem. A professional diagnosis is always the better call.

Arizona-Specific Drain Issues to Know

Phoenix homes deal with some specific drain challenges. Caliche — the hard, calcium-rich layer found in Arizona soil — can develop in older clay sewer lines. Extreme heat accelerates grease buildup in kitchen drains. And desert landscaping means roots from trees like mesquite and eucalyptus are common culprits in sewer line blockages. Whatever the cause, the right tool makes all the difference.
